The check engine light means one of sensor is sending message to computer that something is out of spec. Best things you can do is go to Autozone and let them scan the code for free. They gonna tell you what kind of sensor is sending code. Then you can let mechanic to replace the part.

If you see several codes are showing up on scanner, your chance is ground wire is not connected right.

If check engine light is on, you are not likely pass state inspection so take care that before.
